Secondary 1 and 2 · Lower Secondary Mathematics
Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths Tuition Classes in Singapore
Building the foundation your child needs for Upper Secondary and beyond. Taught by Ms Raine Ang — NUS Applied Mathematics graduate with over 15 years of teaching experience.
Math Academy runs weekly Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths tuition classes in Singapore, and the jump from primary school is exactly why they exist. Model-based problem solving gives way to algebra, the pace of new topics doubles, and many strong PSLE students stumble in Term 1. Classes are capped at 7 students, the smallest size we offer, every worksheet is personally marked, and Ms Raine Ang teaches every class herself. Both G3 and IP students are supported with the same small-group attention.

Taught by Ms Raine Ang — NUS Applied Mathematics, 15+ Years’ Experience
Ms Raine Ang brings over 15 years of teaching experience to Math Academy. An NUS Applied Mathematics graduate, she is part of the Ang family that founded Math Academy in 2001 and has specialised in Lower Secondary Maths since the centre’s earliest days.
More than just a knowledgeable tutor, Ms Ang is known for her warm and empathetic nature. She connects easily with young learners, creating a safe and encouraging environment where Sec 1 and Sec 2 students feel heard, supported, and confident to ask questions. Her ability to identify and address each student’s unique challenges has made her a trusted mentor — many of her students continue with Math Academy all the way through to JC2.
Ms Ang personally marks every piece of homework, identifies recurring misconceptions early, and adjusts her teaching pace for each learner. Whether your child is in the G3 or IP track, she calibrates the depth of questions to match their school environment while keeping the same foundation-first approach for everyone.

Step-by-step video solutions for every worksheet question. Students revise at their own pace anytime — not just during the 1.5 hours a week.
Homework Marking
Ms Raine personally marks every worksheet, identifying mistakes and clarifying doubts so students improve continuously.
Long-Term Pathway
A Foundation That Carries Through to JC2
Many of our current JC2 students have been with Math Academy since Sec 1. The same structured notes, the same exam-trend awareness, the same personal marking — only the tutor changes as students progress to Ms Jolyn for A Maths in Sec 3 and Mr Ang for H2 Maths in JC. Sec 1 isn’t a one-off year of help — it’s the start of a four-to-six year pathway.
Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths Tuition for Both G3 and IP Students
Under the new MOE Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB) system, G3 Mathematics replaces the Express track. Math Academy supports both G3 and IP students — same small class of 7, with question difficulty calibrated to each student’s school.
G3 Track
Strong Grounding in Core Concepts
G3 Math students receive structured teaching, steady development of key concepts, and consistent drilling for accuracy and confidence. The G3 syllabus is the same backbone as the former Express stream — and students taking G3 Math can elect Additional Math from Sec 3.
IP Track
Extension Questions and Deeper Reasoning
IP students are guided through higher-order thinking questions and extension topics that match the rigour and pace of the Integrated Programme. The same foundation-first approach applies — just with more demanding application questions woven into every worksheet.

Watch a Real Sec 1 / Sec 2 Maths Lesson Before You Decide
These are actual class recordings — not promotional videos. You’ll see Ms Raine’s note structure, how she breaks down each new concept step by step for Sec 1 and Sec 2 learners, and how she handles student doubts in real time. Every worksheet question also has a step-by-step video solution — over 2,000 in our library — so students never have to wait till the next lesson to clear their doubts.
What Happens in Your Child’s First Sec 1 or Sec 2 Maths Tuition Class
Classes are 1.5 hours long. Each lesson follows a consistent three-part structure designed to teach, reinforce, and consolidate learning — building the foundation Sec 1 and Sec 2 students need for the leap into Upper Secondary.
Step 1 · First Half
Concept Teaching and Notes
Ms Raine introduces each topic using her carefully crafted notes — the result of years summarising key concepts and recurring exam trends. No pre-learning from school is required; students learn the concept fresh, in clear step-by-step segments.
Step 2 · Second Half
Practice and Application
Students work through worksheets designed to reinforce the lesson’s concepts, featuring questions selected from recent school examination papers reflecting current exam trends. Ms Raine guides through worked examples and provides individual help in real time.
Step 3 · Homework
Personalised Marking and Feedback
Ms Raine personally marks every piece of homework, identifying mistakes and clarifying doubts. Students are expected to complete worksheets before the next lesson — and step-by-step video solutions are available for anything they get stuck on between classes.
Where Sec 1 Maths Trips Students Up — And How We Fix It
After 15+ years teaching Lower Secondary, we have identified the three areas where students most commonly stumble — and our classes are structured to tackle each one head-on.
Challenge 1
Closing the ‘Algebra Gap’
The biggest hurdle for Sec 1 — the fundamental shift from the model-based approach used in primary school to algebra, the core focus of Secondary Math. Many strong PSLE students see their grades drop in Term 1 because of this single transition.
How We Fix It
Algebra — Steps in the Right Order
We teach a strict step-by-step approach. For factorisation: (1) take out common factors, (2) count the number of terms, then (3) apply the appropriate method — difference of squares, cross factorisation, or grouping. Students learn a system, not a trick.
Challenge 2
Introduction to Graphs
Algebra’s first real application — understanding and sketching graphs. Many students struggle with plotting points, interpreting gradients, and recognising different types of curves, even when they have memorised the formulas.
How We Fix It
Graph Sketching — What Earns the Marks
We don’t just teach the concept — we highlight the key features that must be labelled to earn full marks. For quadratic curves, students learn to mark x-intercepts, y-intercepts, and turning points with confidence and precision.
Challenge 3
Introduction to Trigonometry
Trigonometry in Sec 2 introduces a new way of thinking — working with angles, ratios, and special rules. Memorising TOA CAH SOH without proper understanding of which side is which leads to confusion and lost marks.
How We Fix It
Trigonometry — Beyond TOA CAH SOH
The real challenge is correctly identifying the sides of the triangle. We clarify this step first — once the foundation is solid, students apply the ratios with confidence throughout the entire chapter and into Sec 3 A Maths.
Trusted by Sec 1 and Sec 2 Students Across Singapore
Ms Raine Ang’s 15+ years of experience and the Ang family’s continuity at Math Academy since 2001 means many of our Sec 1 students stay with us all the way through to JC2. Word-of-mouth recommendations have been overwhelmingly positive — Lower Sec slots fill up quickly each year and students are placed on the waiting list when classes reach 7.
Recent students have come from a range of G3 and IP schools, including: Methodist Girls School, Crescent Girls School, Bukit Batok Secondary, Kranji Secondary, Nan Hua Secondary, Clementi Town Secondary, Zhenghua Secondary, Commonwealth Secondary, Bukit Panjang Govt High, Hua Yi Secondary, Chua Chu Kang Secondary, Cedar Girls, Singapore Chinese Girls School, and River Valley High.

Frequently Asked Questions — Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths Tuition
All Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths tuition classes at Math Academy are taught by Ms Raine Ang, an NUS Applied Mathematics graduate with over 15 years of teaching experience. She has been a co-educator at Math Academy since 2001 and specialises in foundation-building for Lower Secondary students. Ms Ang personally marks every piece of homework.
Our Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths tuition classes are capped at a maximum of 7 students — the smallest class size we offer across all our programmes. This ensures every student receives personal attention, with Ms Raine able to spot gaps quickly and respond to questions in real time during every lesson.
Yes. Math Academy’s Lower Secondary programme supports both G3 (formerly Express) and IP (Integrated Programme) students. While the Sec 1 and Sec 2 curriculum covers the same foundational concepts, IP students receive additional extension questions and higher-order reasoning practice to match the rigour of their school environment. G3 students receive structured drilling and steady core development for national exams.
Our Lower Secondary Maths tuition covers weekly 1.5-hour lessons, all in-house notes and worksheets, access to our 2,000+ video solution library, and personalised homework marking by Ms Raine.
Math Academy’s tuition centre is located in Bukit Gombak, easily accessible by MRT and bus. For the full address, directions, and class schedule, please visit our contact page or message us via WhatsApp at 9152 9322.
We strongly recommend starting at the beginning of Sec 1, particularly during the December–January window after PSLE results. The shift from primary school’s model-based maths to secondary algebra is the single biggest hurdle most students face — and the students who join us early consistently outperform those who join after struggles emerge. Many of our current JC2 students have been with us since Sec 1.
