Differences between private tutor and group tuition

Mathematics is considered to be an easy yet challenging subject by a large percentage of students in Singapore. This calls for the need to enrol in additional a maths tuition classes so as to stand a better chance of excelling in the subject. Learners are provided with two main choices for their tuition studies namely: one on one private tuition and learning at tuition centres commonly referred to as group tuition. Both one on one and group a maths tuition studies have their own unique qualities and key characteristics.

Group a maths tuition provides students with the ability to share mathematics ideas, skills and formulas. This is often achieved through constant brainstorming where students are allowed to provide important suggestions on topics being discussed. One on one private tuition on the other hand limits the teacher as the only reliable source of information.

One on one private a maths tuition makes it possible for teachers to give their undivided attention to students. This makes it easier to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each student enabling the teachers to come up with strategies that can capitalize on those strengths while providing accurate solutions to any identified weaknesses. The large number of students in a group setting makes it difficult for a teacher to thoroughly analyze his or her students individually. This forces the teacher to generalize their lecture methods.

Tuition centre classes are considered to be relatively cheaper than one on one private tuition classes. The increased number of students in group a maths tuition classes makes it possible for each student to contribute equally towards paying their teacher. One on one private tuition on the other hand makes a single student responsible for paying the teacher’s fees, making it more expensive.

Another great advantage of one on one private tuition over group tuition is the flexibility in terms of altering the learning schedule. Students undertaking one on one private a maths tuition classes have the ability to set their own learning schedules. Group tuition, on the other hand, makes it difficult for the students to agree on specific learning hours hence forcing their teachers to choose for them.

Social interaction is an essential element required when carrying out various day to day activities. Group a maths tuition facilities provide students with an environment that easily provides social values to students as they interact with one another. One on one private tuition, on the other hand, does not fully capitalize on social interaction which might at times prove to be problematic for children in the near future.

One on one private a maths tuition in Singapore is mostly conducted in the student’s private homes. This saves the parent or guardian additional travel expenses that would have been incurred. However, tuition centre classes are conducted in centralized locations hence making it mandatory for each student to travel to the learning centres. This might force students residing in distant geographical locations to incur travelling expenses.

CONCLUSION

The concept of attending additional tuition classes is aimed towards achieving higher grades and mastering of academic concepts. There is a thin line that differentiates tuition centres from the traditional school setting, as some students consider them to be similar. One on one private tuition is considered to be the most popular type of a maths tuition but in the end, selecting the most appropriate tuition method for each student is important.
