Taught by Our Lower Secondary Team
Secondary 1 & 2 Mathematics
Ms Raine Ang
Ms Raine Ang brings over 15 years of teaching experience to Math Academy. An NUS Applied Mathematics graduate, she is part of the Ang family that founded Math Academy in 2001 and has specialised in Lower Secondary Maths since the centre’s earliest days.
More than just a knowledgeable tutor, Ms Ang is known for her warm and empathetic nature. She connects easily with young learners, creating a safe and encouraging environment where Sec 1 students fresh out of PSLE feel heard, supported, and confident to ask questions. Her ability to identify and address each student’s unique challenges has made her a trusted mentor, and many of her Sec 1 students continue with Math Academy all the way through to JC2.
Ms Ang personally marks every piece of homework, identifies recurring misconceptions early, and adjusts her teaching pace for each learner. Whether your child is in the G3 or IP track, she calibrates the depth of questions to match their school environment while keeping the same foundation-first approach for everyone.
Secondary 1 & 2 Mathematics
Mrs Yvette Ang
Mrs Yvette Ang teaches alongside Ms Raine in our Lower Secondary team. A former MOE teacher and a recipient of the MOE Teaching Award, the Ministry of Education’s teaching scholarship, she brings the kind of classroom warmth that makes younger students want to show up. Her lessons are lively and interactive. Students ask questions freely, mistakes are treated as part of learning, and nobody gets left at the back of the room.
Down to earth and endlessly patient, Mrs Ang meets every child where they are. She builds the foundation from the ground up, making sure the basics are solid before moving on, so that a student who once found Maths intimidating starts to feel capable.
Her focus in Sec 1 and 2 is always what comes next. She eases students into the demands of Upper Secondary Maths steadily, so that the jump to Sec 3 and A Maths feels natural rather than daunting, never a wall they hit unprepared.

IP students receive extension questions and deeper reasoning practice. Let us know your child’s school topics and upcoming assessments so we can discuss how the programme fits their needs.
How to Choose the Right Sec 1 Math Tutor in Singapore
There is no shortage of Sec 1 maths tuition in Singapore. Here are the four things that make the biggest difference for a child making the jump from PSLE, and honest questions worth asking any centre you consider.
1 · Class Size
How many students share the tutor?
In Sec 1, gaps form quietly and need catching early, which is hard to do in a large group. Look for a small, capped class size, and check the real cap rather than the average. Our Sec 1 classes are capped at 7.
2 · Who Marks the Work
Is homework marked by the tutor, or an assistant?
Marking is where misconceptions get caught, so it matters who does it. At Math Academy, our tutors personally mark every piece of homework.
3 · Tutor and Curriculum
Who teaches, and are the materials MOE-aligned?
Look for a qualified tutor and structured materials that follow the MOE scheme of work. Our Sec 1 classes are taught by our Lower Secondary team using in-house notes built around the MOE syllabus.
4 · Continuity
Can the centre take your child beyond Sec 1?
Continuity matters, staying with one centre keeps the relationship and teaching style consistent. We have taught the same students from Sec 1 through to JC2, with a consistent approach the whole way.

What Happens in Your Child’s First Sec 1 Maths Tuition Class
Classes are 1.5 hours long. Each lesson follows a consistent three-part structure designed to teach, reinforce, and consolidate learning, building the foundation Sec 1 students need for the leap into Upper Secondary.
Step 1 · First Half
Concept Teaching and Notes
Our tutor introduces each topic using carefully crafted notes, the result of years summarising key concepts and recurring exam trends. No pre-learning from school is required; students learn the concept fresh, in clear step-by-step segments.
Step 2 · Second Half
Practice and Application
Students work through worksheets designed to reinforce the lesson’s concepts, featuring questions selected from recent school examination papers reflecting current exam trends. Our tutor guides through worked examples and provides individual help in real time.
Step 3 · Homework
Personalised Marking and Feedback
Our tutor personally marks every piece of homework, identifying mistakes and clarifying doubts. Students are expected to complete worksheets before the next lesson so the tutor can see which steps need further explanation.
Where Sec 1 Maths Trips Students Up, And How We Fix It
Three useful foundations for Sec 1 are understanding letters in algebra, handling negative numbers and interpreting relationships on a graph. Here are examples of the thinking students need to practise.
Challenge 1
Closing the ‘Algebra Gap’
A letter can represent an unknown number or a quantity that varies. Students need to understand what each term means before combining terms or solving an equation.
How We Fix It
Algebra, Steps in the Right Order
For example, 3x + 2 + x = 4x + 2: combine the x terms and keep the constant separate. In 3x + 2 = 14, subtract 2 from both sides, then divide both sides by 3 to get x = 4. Substituting 4 back into the original equation checks the answer.
Challenge 2
Negative Numbers and Directed Number Sense
Sec 1 is where negative numbers appear everywhere at once, in arithmetic, in algebra, and in solving equations. Small sign errors quietly cost marks across the whole paper, and they compound if the habit isn’t fixed early.
How We Fix It
One Consistent Set of Rules
A number line makes subtraction visible: starting at −3 and moving 5 places left gives −3 − 5 = −8. Students can then compare this with −3 + 5 = 2, explaining the direction of movement before relying on a sign rule.
Challenge 3
Coordinates and Linear Graphs
Plotting coordinates connects a numerical relationship to a picture. Reversing the x and y coordinates or overlooking the scale changes the graph, even when the arithmetic is correct.
How We Fix It
Connect the Table to the Graph
For y = 2x + 1, x values of 0, 1 and 2 give the points (0, 1), (1, 3) and (2, 5). Students can check the order of each coordinate, label both axes and use a consistent scale before drawing the line.

Secondary 1 builds on primary-school arithmetic and introduces more formal algebra, negative numbers and equations. Students learn to use letters for quantities, show each step of a solution and check their answers. A strong grasp of fractions, ratios and basic operations remains useful.
