Secondary 1 · Lower Secondary Mathematics
Secondary 1 Maths Tuition in Singapore
Helping your child make the leap from PSLE to Secondary 1 algebra. Small classes capped at 7, taught by Ms Raine Ang — NUS Applied Mathematics graduate with over 15 years of experience. Based in Bukit Gombak, West Singapore.
Math Academy runs weekly Secondary 1 Maths tuition classes in Singapore, and the leap from primary school is exactly why they exist. The model-based problem solving of PSLE gives way to formal algebra, the pace of new topics roughly doubles, and many strong PSLE scorers see their grades dip in Term 1. Our Sec 1 classes are capped at 7 students, one of the smallest class sizes in Singapore, every worksheet is personally marked, and Ms Raine Ang teaches every class herself. Both G3 and IP students are supported with the same close attention.

Taught by Ms Raine Ang — NUS Applied Mathematics, 15+ Years’ Experience
Ms Raine Ang brings over 15 years of teaching experience to Math Academy. An NUS Applied Mathematics graduate, she is part of the Ang family that founded Math Academy in 2001 and has specialised in Lower Secondary Maths since the centre’s earliest days.
More than just a knowledgeable tutor, Ms Ang is known for her warm and empathetic nature. She connects easily with young learners, creating a safe and encouraging environment where Sec 1 students fresh out of PSLE feel heard, supported, and confident to ask questions. Her ability to identify and address each student’s unique challenges has made her a trusted mentor, and many of her Sec 1 students continue with Math Academy all the way through to JC2.
Ms Ang personally marks every piece of homework, identifies recurring misconceptions early, and adjusts her teaching pace for each learner. Whether your child is in the G3 or IP track, she calibrates the depth of questions to match their school environment while keeping the same foundation-first approach for everyone.
What Every Sec 1 Maths Tuition Student Gets

Notes
Structured notes curated by Ms Raine, breaking each new Sec 1 concept into clear, step-by-step segments from foundational to challenging.
Video Solutions
Step-by-step video solutions for every worksheet question. Students revise at their own pace anytime, not just during the 1.5 hours a week.
Homework Marking
Ms Raine personally marks every worksheet, identifying mistakes and clarifying doubts so students improve continuously.
Long-Term Pathway
A Foundation That Carries Through to JC2
Many of our current JC2 students have been with Math Academy since Sec 1. The same structured notes, the same exam-trend awareness, the same personal marking, only the tutor changes as students progress to Ms Jolyn for A Maths in Sec 3 and Mr Ang for H2 Maths in JC. Already in Sec 2? See our Sec 2 Maths tuition. Sec 1 isn’t a one-off year of help, it’s the start of a four-to-six year pathway.
Sec 1 Maths Tuition for Both G3 and IP Students
Under the new MOE Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB) system, G3 Mathematics replaces the Express track. Math Academy supports both G3 and IP students, same small class of 7, with question difficulty calibrated to each student’s school.
G3 Track
Strong Grounding in Core Concepts
G3 Math students receive structured teaching, steady development of key concepts, and consistent drilling for accuracy and confidence. The G3 syllabus is the same backbone as the former Express stream, and students taking G3 Math can elect Additional Math from Sec 3.
IP Track
Extension Questions and Deeper Reasoning
IP students are guided through higher-order thinking questions and extension topics that match the rigour and pace of the Integrated Programme. The same foundation-first approach applies, just with more demanding application questions woven into every worksheet.
How to Choose the Right Sec 1 Maths Tuition in Singapore
There is no shortage of Sec 1 maths tuition in Singapore. Here are the four things that make the biggest difference for a child making the jump from PSLE, and honest questions worth asking any centre you consider.
1 · Class Size
How many students share the tutor?
In Sec 1, gaps form quietly and need catching early, which is hard to do in a large group. Look for a small, capped class size, and check the real cap rather than the average. Our Sec 1 classes are capped at 7, one of the smallest in Singapore.
2 · Who Marks the Work
Is homework marked by the tutor, or an assistant?
Marking is where misconceptions get caught, so it matters who does it. At Math Academy, Ms Raine personally marks every piece of homework herself.
3 · Tutor and Curriculum
Who teaches, and are the materials MOE-aligned?
Look for a qualified tutor and structured materials that follow the MOE scheme of work. Our Sec 1 classes are taught by an NUS Applied Mathematics graduate using in-house notes built around the MOE syllabus.
4 · Continuity
Can the centre take your child beyond Sec 1?
Continuity matters, staying with one centre keeps the relationship and teaching style consistent. We have taught the same students from Sec 1 through to JC2, with a consistent approach the whole way.
Sec 1 Maths Tuition Fees

These are actual class recordings, not promotional videos. You’ll see Ms Raine’s note structure, how she breaks down each new Sec 1 concept step by step, and how she handles student doubts in real time. Every worksheet question also has a step-by-step video solution, over 2,000 in our library, so students never have to wait till the next lesson to clear their doubts.
What Happens in Your Child’s First Sec 1 Maths Tuition Class
Classes are 1.5 hours long. Each lesson follows a consistent three-part structure designed to teach, reinforce, and consolidate learning, building the foundation Sec 1 students need for the leap into Upper Secondary.
Step 1 · First Half
Concept Teaching and Notes
Ms Raine introduces each topic using her carefully crafted notes, the result of years summarising key concepts and recurring exam trends. No pre-learning from school is required; students learn the concept fresh, in clear step-by-step segments.
Step 2 · Second Half
Practice and Application
Students work through worksheets designed to reinforce the lesson’s concepts, featuring questions selected from recent school examination papers reflecting current exam trends. Ms Raine guides through worked examples and provides individual help in real time.
Step 3 · Homework
Personalised Marking and Feedback
Ms Raine personally marks every piece of homework, identifying mistakes and clarifying doubts. Students are expected to complete worksheets before the next lesson, and step-by-step video solutions are available for anything they get stuck on between classes.
Where Sec 1 Maths Trips Students Up, And How We Fix It
After 15+ years teaching Lower Secondary, we have identified the three areas where Sec 1 students most commonly stumble, and our classes are structured to tackle each one head-on.
Challenge 1
Closing the ‘Algebra Gap’
The biggest hurdle for Sec 1, the fundamental shift from the model-based approach used in primary school to algebra, the core focus of Secondary Math. Many strong PSLE students see their grades drop in Term 1 because of this single transition.
How We Fix It
Algebra, Steps in the Right Order
We teach a strict step-by-step approach. For factorisation: (1) take out common factors, (2) count the number of terms, then (3) apply the appropriate method, difference of squares, cross factorisation, or grouping. Students learn a system, not a trick.
Challenge 2
Negative Numbers and Directed Number Sense
Sec 1 is where negative numbers appear everywhere at once, in arithmetic, in algebra, and in solving equations. Small sign errors quietly cost marks across the whole paper, and they compound if the habit isn’t fixed early.
How We Fix It
One Consistent Set of Rules
We drill a single, consistent way to handle signs through every topic, so students stop second-guessing. Once the rules are automatic, the careless sign errors that drag down Term 1 results disappear.
Challenge 3
Coordinates and Linear Graphs
Algebra’s first real application, plotting points, reading gradients, and sketching straight-line graphs. Many students struggle to connect the equation to the line on the page, even when they have memorised the formula.
How We Fix It
Linear Graphs, What Earns the Marks
We don’t just teach the concept, we highlight the features that must be labelled to earn full marks: intercepts, gradient, and the equation of the line. Students learn to move confidently between the algebra and the graph.

Frequently Asked Questions, Sec 1 Maths Tuition
All Sec 1 Maths tuition classes at Math Academy are taught by Ms Raine Ang, an NUS Applied Mathematics graduate with over 15 years of teaching experience. She has been a co-educator at Math Academy since 2001 and specialises in foundation-building for Lower Secondary students. Ms Ang personally marks every piece of homework.
Our Sec 1 Maths tuition classes are capped at a maximum of 7 students, one of the smallest class sizes in Singapore and the smallest we offer across all our programmes. This ensures every student receives personal attention, with Ms Raine able to spot gaps quickly and respond to questions in real time during every lesson.
Sec 1 Maths replaces the model-based problem solving of primary school with formal algebra, and introduces a new level of abstraction across number, geometry, and graphs. The pace of new topics also roughly doubles. This is why many strong PSLE scorers see their grades dip in Term 1, the thinking required is genuinely different, and early support helps students adjust before gaps form.
We strongly recommend starting at the beginning of Sec 1, particularly during the December to January window after PSLE results. The shift from primary school’s model-based maths to secondary algebra is the single biggest hurdle most students face, and the students who join us early consistently do better than those who join after struggles emerge. Many of our current JC2 students have been with us since Sec 1.
Four things matter most for Sec 1: the real class size cap, not the average; who actually marks the homework, the tutor or an assistant; the tutor’s qualifications and whether the materials follow the MOE syllabus; and whether the centre can keep teaching your child beyond Sec 1. At Math Academy, classes are capped at 7, Ms Raine marks every worksheet herself, she is an NUS Applied Mathematics graduate using MOE-aligned in-house notes, and many students stay with us from Sec 1 through to JC2.
Yes. Math Academy’s Sec 1 programme supports both G3 (formerly Express) and IP (Integrated Programme) students. While the Sec 1 curriculum covers the same foundational concepts, IP students receive additional extension questions and higher-order reasoning practice to match the rigour of their school environment. G3 students receive structured drilling and steady core development for national exams.
Our Sec 1 Maths tuition is $300 per month, fixed. This covers one weekly 1.5-hour lesson in a class capped at 7, all in-house notes and worksheets, access to our 2,000+ video solution library, and personalised homework marking by Ms Raine. There are no materials or registration fees.
Math Academy’s tuition centre is in Bukit Gombak, West Singapore, one MRT stop from Choa Chu Kang and a short ride from Bukit Batok, Jurong, and Tengah. For the full address, directions, and class schedule, please visit our contact page or message us via WhatsApp at 9152 9322.
