Secondary 2 · Lower Secondary Mathematics
Secondary 2 Maths Tuition in Singapore
The crucial year before Sec 3 A-Math. Small classes capped at 7, taught by our Lower Secondary team of NUS Mathematics and ex-MOE educators in Bukit Gombak.
Math Academy runs weekly Secondary 2 Maths tuition classes in Singapore, and Sec 2 is the year parents most often underestimate. On the surface, it looks like a quieter consolidation year, but the Singapore math syllabus steps up sharply with trigonometry, congruence and similarity, and quadratic algebra. The gaps that form here are the ones that hurt most at O Level. It is also the subject streaming year that quietly shapes the Sec 3 decision of whether your child takes Additional Maths. Our Sec 2 classes are capped at 7 students, one of the smallest in Singapore, and every worksheet is personally marked. Our tutors teach every class themselves. Both G3 and IP students are supported with the same close attention.

Taught by Our Lower Secondary Team
Secondary 1 & 2 Mathematics
Ms Raine Ang
Ms Raine Ang brings over 15 years of teaching experience to Math Academy. An NUS Applied Mathematics graduate, she is part of the Ang family that founded Math Academy in 2001 and has specialised in Lower Secondary Maths since the centre’s earliest days.
More than just a knowledgeable tutor, Ms Ang is known for her warm and empathetic nature. She connects easily with young learners, creating a safe and encouraging environment where Sec 2 students feel heard, supported, and confident to ask questions. Her ability to identify and address each student’s unique challenges has made her a trusted mentor, and many of her Sec 2 students continue with Math Academy through Upper Secondary and all the way to JC2.
Ms Ang personally marks every piece of homework, identifies recurring misconceptions early, and adjusts her teaching pace for each learner. Whether your child is in the G3 or IP track, she calibrates the depth of questions to match their school environment while keeping the same foundation-first approach for everyone.
Secondary 1 & 2 Mathematics
Mrs Yvette Ang
Mrs Yvette Ang teaches alongside Ms Raine in our Lower Secondary team. A former MOE teacher and a recipient of the MOE Teaching Award, the Ministry of Education’s teaching scholarship, she brings the kind of classroom warmth that makes younger students want to show up. Her lessons are lively and interactive. Students ask questions freely, mistakes are treated as part of learning, and nobody gets left at the back of the room.
Down to earth and endlessly patient, Mrs Ang meets every child where they are. She builds the foundation from the ground up, making sure the basics are solid before moving on, so that a student who once found Maths intimidating starts to feel capable.
Her focus in Sec 1 and 2 is always what comes next. She eases students into the demands of Upper Secondary Maths steadily, so that the jump to Sec 3 and A Maths feels natural rather than daunting, never a wall they hit unprepared.

Long-Term Pathway
From Sec 2 Into A Math and Beyond
Sec 2 is the bridge into Upper Secondary, and a strong Sec 2 is what keeps the Additional Maths option open. New to secondary maths? Start with our Sec 1 Maths tuition. From Sec 3, students progress to Mr Ian Ang for A Maths and stay with him for H2 Maths in JC, the same structured notes and personal marking the whole way. Many of our JC2 students have been with us since Lower Secondary.
Sec 2 Maths Tuition for Both G3 and IP Students
Under the new MOE Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB) system, G3 Mathematics replaces the Express track. Math Academy supports both G3 and IP students, same small class of 7, with question difficulty calibrated to each student’s school.
G3 Track
Strong Grounding in Core Concepts
G3 Math students receive structured teaching, steady development of key concepts, and consistent drilling for accuracy and confidence. The G3 syllabus is the same backbone as the former Express stream, and a strong Sec 2 keeps the door to Additional Math open from Sec 3.
IP Track
Extension Questions and Deeper Reasoning
IP students are guided through higher-order thinking questions and extension topics that match the rigour and pace of the Integrated Programme. The same foundation-first approach applies, just with more demanding application questions woven into every worksheet.
How to Choose the Right Sec 2 Math Tutor in Singapore
Sec 2 is the year to get the foundation right before the Sec 3 jump. Here are the four things that make the biggest difference, and honest questions worth asking any centre you consider.
1 · Class Size
How many students share the tutor?
In Sec 2, gaps form quietly behind a calm-looking term, and need catching early, which is hard to do in a large group. Look for a small, capped class size, and check the real cap rather than the average. Our Sec 2 classes are capped at 7, one of the smallest in Singapore.
2 · Who Marks the Work
Is homework marked by the tutor, or an assistant?
Marking is where misconceptions get caught, so it matters who does it. At Math Academy, our tutors personally mark every piece of homework.
3 · Tutor and Curriculum
Who teaches, and are the materials MOE-aligned?
Look for a qualified tutor and structured materials that follow the MOE scheme of work. Our Sec 2 classes are taught by an NUS Applied Mathematics graduate using in-house notes built around the MOE syllabus.
4 · Pathway
Can the centre take your child through to A Math?
Sec 2 sets up the Sec 3 Additional Maths decision, so continuity matters. Staying with one centre keeps the relationship and teaching style consistent. We teach the same students from Lower Secondary through A Math and on to JC2.

What Happens in Your Child’s First Sec 2 Maths Tuition Class
Classes are 1.5 hours long. Each lesson follows a consistent three-part structure designed to teach, reinforce, and consolidate learning, building the foundation Sec 2 students need before the step up to Upper Secondary and A Math.
Step 1 · First Half
Concept Teaching and Notes
Our tutor introduces each topic using carefully crafted notes, the result of years summarising key concepts and recurring exam trends. No pre-learning from school is required; students learn the concept fresh, in clear step-by-step segments.
Step 2 · Second Half
Practice and Application
Students work through worksheets designed to reinforce the lesson’s concepts, featuring questions selected from recent school examination papers reflecting current exam trends. Our tutor guides through worked examples and provides individual help in real time.
Step 3 · Homework
Personalised Marking and Feedback
Our tutor personally marks every piece of homework, identifying mistakes and clarifying doubts. Students are expected to complete worksheets before the next lesson, with Math Academy Intelligence coming soon to give extra help between classes.
Where Sec 2 Maths Trips Students Up, And How We Fix It
After 15+ years teaching Lower Secondary, we have identified the three areas where Sec 2 students most commonly stumble, and our classes are structured to tackle each one head-on.
Challenge 1
Introduction to Trigonometry
Trigonometry introduces a new way of thinking, working with angles, ratios, and special rules. Memorising TOA CAH SOH without properly understanding which side is which leads to confusion and lost marks across the whole topic.
How We Fix It
Trigonometry, Beyond TOA CAH SOH
The real challenge is correctly identifying the sides of the triangle relative to the angle. We drill this step first, and once the foundation is solid, students apply the ratios with confidence throughout the chapter and into Sec 3 A Maths.
Challenge 2
Quadratic Expansion and Factorisation
Sec 2 algebra steps up sharply with expanding and factorising quadratic expressions. Students who rely on guesswork rather than a method stall here, and the same weakness resurfaces in Sec 3 A Maths if it isn’t fixed.
How We Fix It
A Reliable, Repeatable Method
We teach factorisation as a clear sequence rather than trial and error: identify the structure, apply the right technique, then check by expanding. Students build a method they can trust under exam pressure.
Challenge 3
Congruence and Similarity
This is where geometry becomes about reasoning, not just measuring. Many students struggle to set up a correct proof or to spot which sides and angles correspond, and lose marks on otherwise solvable questions.
How We Fix It
Proof, Step by Step
We teach a structured way to identify corresponding parts and lay out a proof clearly, so students earn full method marks. Logical, well-presented reasoning becomes a habit rather than a hurdle.
Trusted by Sec 2 Students Across Singapore
Our tutors’ experience and the Ang family’s continuity at Math Academy since 2001 mean many of our Sec 2 students stay with us through Upper Secondary and all the way to JC2. Word-of-mouth recommendations have been overwhelmingly positive, Sec 2 slots fill up quickly each year and students are placed on the waiting list when classes reach 7.
Recent Sec 2 students have come from a range of G3 and IP schools, including: Methodist Girls School, Crescent Girls School, Bukit Batok Secondary, Kranji Secondary, Nan Hua Secondary, Clementi Town Secondary, Zhenghua Secondary, Commonwealth Secondary, Bukit Panjang Govt High, Hua Yi Secondary, Chua Chu Kang Secondary, Cedar Girls, Singapore Chinese Girls School, and River Valley High.

Frequently Asked Questions, Sec 2 Maths Tuition
Our Sec 2 Maths tuition classes are taught by our Lower Secondary team: Ms Raine Ang, an NUS Applied Mathematics graduate with over 15 years of teaching experience, and Mrs Yvette Ang, a former MOE teacher and MOE Teaching Award recipient. Homework is personally marked, and both tutors track every student’s progress closely.
Our Sec 2 Maths tuition classes are capped at a maximum of 7 students, one of the smallest class sizes in Singapore and the smallest we offer across all our programmes. This ensures every student receives personal attention, with our tutor able to spot gaps quickly and respond to questions in real time during every lesson.
Sec 2 builds on the Sec 1 foundation and is largely a consolidation year, but it introduces tougher material: trigonometry, congruence and similarity, quadratic expansion and factorisation, and simultaneous equations. The difficulty often rises without an obvious warning sign, so gaps can form quietly. It is also the year that feeds directly into the Sec 3 decision of whether your child takes Additional Maths.
Yes, indirectly but importantly. A strong, confident grasp of Sec 2 algebra and trigonometry is what makes Additional Maths manageable in Sec 3, and many schools weigh Sec 2 performance when advising on subject combinations. Building a solid Sec 2 foundation keeps the A Math option genuinely open rather than letting it close off through avoidable gaps.
Four things matter most for Sec 2: the real class size cap, not the average; who actually marks the homework, the tutor or an assistant; the tutor’s qualifications and whether the materials closely follow the MOE math syllabus; and whether the centre can keep teaching your child through to A Math and beyond. At Math Academy, classes are capped at 7, our tutors mark every worksheet themselves, they are NUS Mathematics and ex-MOE educators using MOE-aligned in-house notes, and many students stay with us from Sec 1 through to JC2.
Yes. Math Academy’s Sec 2 programme supports both G3 (formerly Express) and IP (Integrated Programme) students. While the Sec 2 curriculum covers the same foundational concepts, IP students receive additional extension questions and higher-order reasoning practice to match the rigour of their school environment. G3 students receive structured drilling and steady core development for national exams.
Our Sec 2 Maths tuition is $300 per month, fixed. This covers one weekly 1.5-hour lesson in a class capped at 7, all in-house notes and worksheets, and personalised homework marking. There are no materials or registration fees.
